In the early 1980’s, Geologist Bill Stone had the idea to begin making wood bases for mineral specimens to rest on furniture. His vision for an artistic base that could display the mineral in almost any orientation was truly unique and revolutionary. He soon started taking orders and began working out of his garage. In 1985, his wife, Elsie, decided to join him and make The Sunnywood Collection a full time operation.
It didn’t take long before the idea of acrylic bases became more popular with collectors and the demand for a larger facility became apparent. We continue to make our home in Northeast Aurora, Colorado in our 4,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility, complete with our showroom.
As a result of the booming display business, Bill began buying fine mineral specimens to travel with to shows to help promote the bases. He soon found that people were becoming just as interested in the specimens he had on display as they were in the bases. Thus The Sunnywood Collection remains a mainstay at mineral shows throughout the United States as a dealer in fine mineral specimens and a specialist in the display of minerals, fossils, and other natural art.
In 2006, Adam Reimnitz joined The Sunnywood Collection team and has worked diligently to grow the success of the mineral and mounting operations. His wife, Heather, joined him full time in 2013 and together, they run the day to day operations of The Sunnywood Collection in Colorado. His team of skilled specialists have many years of experience and are always up for any challenging task.
The name Sunnywood comes from a 40 acre area of land in upstate NY that has belonged to Bill’s family for many years. Situated on Lake Champlain, it is truly a beautiful part of the country, just across from Vermont and only 15 miles south of Canada. As they begin to work into retirement, Bill and Elsie continue to split their time between their homes in Sunnywood and Denver, where they are able to travel and see their children and grandchildren in Steamboat Springs, CO and Washington state.
